LAD #17-The Gospel of Wealth
This essay by Andrew Carnegie is about the duty of the upperclass wealthy who have built massive fortunes through various industries during the Industrial Revolution. He feels that is the moral responsibilty of the wealthy to work to help benefit those less fortunate than themsevles. In his opinon, the wealthy should be in charge of distributing the money because they have the most experience, background and knowledge about how to rightfully distribute the money in the most effective and beneficial ways possible. Carnegie also supports the governments policy of lassiez-faire, which applies little government in the business affairs of the nation because he feels it is the duty of industrialists to control the economy and look after that it succeeds and that men should work as hard as possible to achieve their goals and to excel and become wealthy. Another major belief of Carnegie's was that taxes and donations should be use to benefit the nation in ways such as public libraries, schools, institutions and community buildings. Carnegie had a strong belief in what should be done in the nation, especially with its economics to help better the lives of others.

LAD #16-Emancipation Proclamation
Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation essentially freed all the slaves the Confederate States, angering the South from the point of secession. It also officially made slavery the cause for war and showed that Lincoln backed the anti-slavery movement completely. The proclamation was a huge step in the Civil War. It brought in slavery as the main issue and just angered the South more. The North was gaining more support from the government after this, and the South's chances for victory were steadily getting worse. Lincoln was officially backing the North with more supplies, money and naval and army support which were far superior to those of the South. The South couldn't match the North's technology, resources, size or capital and the Emancipation was the cultimating factor that showed the South had no chance and that the North would come down and free all their slaves.

LAD #15-The Second Inauguaral Address of President Abraham Lincoln
This speech was not an optimistic nor forgiving speech. It was coming toward the defeat of the South by the North and the North was looking for punishment for the South for rebellion. Slavery was about to be abolished everywhere in America and there was no sense of nationalist union feelings amongst the nation. Lincoln was in no means bragging about the immeint win that the North was about to gain but he did focus on how the evils of slavery were ending. He describes about how he anticipated that the issue of slavery would lead the United States to war, but he never expected it to drag out this long and become this much of a turning point in American history as it becomes. Lincoln believes that the just side one because they were fighting for the right reason and to help save the blacks from the terrible fate of slavery.

LAD #14-Dred Scott Decision
The Dred Scott Decision was one of the most controversial cases in American history. In 1857, he sued saying that since he was born and raised in a free state, he should be a free man. He was forced into slavery and Scott was trying to prove that it was illegal because he should be considered free and not forced into slavery. The trial was very controversal and got taken all the way up to the Supreme Court. The verdict was outraged by the North and abolitionists alike and is one of the most criticized verdicts in American history. The judge ruled that since Scott was black, he had no rights and slaves are considered property and so was her, therefore property could not sue making the case invaild. Since the trial was considered unconstitutional, Scott lost and left a bitterness between the North and South that helped spark the Civil War.

LAD #13-Lincoln's Gettysburg Address
The Gettysburg Address is one of the most quoted, well known and eloquent speeches ever given in American history. Lincoln states his views upon human equality (referring to the issue of slavery that was being disputed at the time) based upon statements in the Declaration of Independence and other important American history legal documents. His speech declared that all men had the right to freedom and that it was the American way. He was declaring that the citizens were denying the African Americans the right to freedom that the United States had fought so hard for against Britain. This war, it morally needed to end in the favor of the North because it was the right thing.

LAD #12-Lincoln's First Inaugural Address
Abraham Lincoln, although it was not known at the time, was about to come into office and make history. His speech informed the American public of his position to try and avoid war between the North and South. He tried to appease both sides in his speech in order to instate peace amongst the two. Lincoln felt that nothing more could neccessarily be done regarding slavery according to the writings of the constitution. He wished to establish a more perfect union and preserve the union and all it stood for. Lincoln was a cautious man and in his inaugural speech, he spoke to merely take charge and be a mediator between the North and South to try and avoid the conflict as best he could or until morally so that one side did not violate anything against the law of the land. The country was not aware that they were in the presence and swearing in one of America's greatest Presidents ever.

Calhoun's speech was directed towards the Senators during the 1850s and was talking about how he felt that the issue of slavery should not be revisited. He felt that if talks of changing or addressing slavery agains would only lead to secession of one part or worse. The issue of slavery was one that could easily end the United States and all the progress it had made since the Revolutionary War. He also stated that if one group got control of the government, such as his fear the North, they would push slavery they felt and it would anger the other into means of most likely secession or rebellion. He felt that any measure necessary needed to be taken to avoid revisiting the conflict of slavery to avoid the disunion of the Untied States.

LAD #10-Polk's War Message
This speech by James K. Polk dealt with the conflict with Mexico and their attack on American citizens. Essentially he considered this to be a reason enough for war and wanted to declare war on Mexico with help from Congress. After annexing Texas, tensions between the two were high and so the United States made an effort to fix this. They sent a negociator and he was mistreated and this only made things worse. It was so aggravating to Polk and caused him to demand a war because he was sick of the mistreatment from the Mexicans and felt that in order to make things better, a war would eventually break out anyways. He then goes on to talk about the war and battles and the progress of the war. Essentially he is defending the reason to go to war and updating the public about the war. This can be compared somewhat to the fireside chats of FDR.

They stated that when the government was at wrong, it was up to the people to prove what is right, as they were doing with women's rights. Also, they listed the rights that they have been denied and sterotypes that they have been confined to. The writers are also thoughtful enough to offer what should be done, a list of demands that will equalize the rights between men and women and what the government can do to meet their desires. This convention was a major step in paving the way for women's rights to gain momentum and thrive into the changes that have occured today.

Christopher Columbus: Hero or Villian?
I feel that Christopher Columbus is a hero because he opened up Europe to a New World that they never new existed. He is responsible for the Europeans coming to America and all of the European influence that we have today on our great nation. Although there were some drawbacks to his arrival, particularly for the Native Americans, some of the Exploreres and Columbus' actions were done unknowledgable. To the Explorers and Columbus, the Native Americans were foreign and the Europeans had never seen them before. Also the major killer of disease was not purposely spread because the Europeans were not aware of it upon arrival. Overall Christopher Columbus help bring over Europeans and modernize and improve the country that it was into the bustling, successful nation that it is today.

LAD #4- Federalist Papers No. 10
1. Why are factions so difficult to eliminate?
Factions are so difficult to eliminate because the citizens are so diverse and have such different beliefs about the government that some feel others should overpower others based upon materialistic things such as money, land and wealth. Also that the government tends to side with the wealthy because in society money equals power and they government feels that they should try to be in the wealthy's good graces. Essentially the gap between the wealthy and the poor is a main factor and since wealth is not equal, factions will live on.
2. If factions cannot be removed then how can they be controlled?
If factions cannot be removed, then they can be controlled by removing the causes of factions or controlling its effects. By being able to reduce the number of factions, the society is much better off. Learning to reduce and control the factions is suggested under two ideas, one that is to eliminate liberty, which is immediately shut down in the passage and also to create a society with similar opinions and interests, which is also not acceptable to James Madison, the author. Essentially the only way to control factions is to control its effects.

LAD #1- Mayflower Compact
1. What concepts are included in the Mayflower Compact?
In the Mayflower Compact, essentially the concept was that the settlers were pledging that they still had an alleigance toward the king, but for survival a system to help control life in the New World needed to be adapted. The settlers were going to still listen to the king, but at the same time they needed to organize themselves due to the large distance between the king and the New World and its settlers.
2. How does the Mayflower Compact reflect and attachment to both the "Old" and "New" worlds?
The Mayflower Compact was intented to prove to the king that the settlers would still obey and respect the king back in the "Old" World, but at the same time a new lifestyle needed to be developed in the "New" World and showing that the "Old" World and the "New" World were still untied and that the settlers would still respect the "Old" World.
3. How did the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut differ from the Mayflower Compact?
The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut differ from the Mayflower Compact in the fact that the Fundamental Orders contained the first ever constitution. The Mayflower Compact was more of a declaration to the Old World of what the settlers were going to do to govern themselves in the colonies and at the same time respect the king, while the Fudamental Orders actually set up a government and described the powers it possessed.
4. What prompted the colonists of Connecticut to take this approach to government, i.e.: use of a written Constitution?
The colonists were prompted to use a written constitution because they saw the advantages themselves during the Pequot War when towns joined up to fight together strongly. This inspired the constitution of Connecticut River towns.
5. In what significant way(s) does the Fundamental Orders reflect a fear of and safeguard against the usurping of power by one person or a chosen few?
Many of the restrictions within the constitution reflect a fear that the Fundamental Orders had such as giving a magistrate one year terms. Another reason is that the power to choose the leader is with the people because they each get exactly one vote to choose a leader. Also anyone running for magistrate must have experience with the General Court so that they are not new to politics. The governor needs to meet even more requirements than the magistrate because they must be a member of a congregation and be a former magistrate. Rules such as the ones described help ensure that the proper leaders are elsected who will not overtake the government or take advantage of their powers.
