LAD #10

LAD #10-Polk's War Message

This speech by James K. Polk dealt with the conflict with Mexico and their attack on American citizens. Essentially he considered this to be a reason enough for war and wanted to declare war on Mexico with help from Congress. After annexing Texas, tensions between the two were high and so the United States made an effort to fix this. They sent a negociator and he was mistreated and this only made things worse. It was so aggravating to Polk and caused him to demand a war because he was sick of the mistreatment from the Mexicans and felt that in order to make things better, a war would eventually break out anyways. He then goes on to talk about the war and battles and the progress of the war. Essentially he is defending the reason to go to war and updating the public about the war. This can be compared somewhat to the fireside chats of FDR.
