LAD #14-Dred Scott Decision
The Dred Scott Decision was one of the most controversial cases in American history. In 1857, he sued saying that since he was born and raised in a free state, he should be a free man. He was forced into slavery and Scott was trying to prove that it was illegal because he should be considered free and not forced into slavery. The trial was very controversal and got taken all the way up to the Supreme Court. The verdict was outraged by the North and abolitionists alike and is one of the most criticized verdicts in American history. The judge ruled that since Scott was black, he had no rights and slaves are considered property and so was her, therefore property could not sue making the case invaild. Since the trial was considered unconstitutional, Scott lost and left a bitterness between the North and South that helped spark the Civil War.
